Behavior charts and sheets are a popular tool to motivate and teach children new skills and good habits when it comes to acceptable classroom behavior. If you’re a parent or a teacher, you would have come across a behavior chart at least once in your work with children. These sheets can help with problem solving when it comes to some kinds of school behavior, and a good behavior chart can make a huge difference.
In its most basic form, children are rewarded for making progress on a skill that they are working on. Behavior plans and daily behavior charts can also be used to track the frequency of a certain behavior and can be useful for instilling daily habits and teaching adaptive skills to younger children. These can also be referred to as reward charts or sticker charts when teachers attach a reward to specific behaviors. A reward system can properly motivate students, even if it’s just a smiley face sticker or incentive chart to provide positivity around kids behavior, either as a group or individual student.
It is important to note that a behavior chart is not a substitute for building a structured learning environment where expectations are clearly set. It’s also not a substitute in an IEP or special education situation where a student may have ADHD or autism where specific teaching methods may be more appropriate. Children are motivated differently and personalizing behavior charts to suit each group is key to success when trying to achieve a desired behavior.
